From Waste to Matter is a research project focused on exploring the design potential of biomaterials derived from organic waste. This ongoing series investigates how organic waste, starting with coffee grounds and orange peels, can be transformed into bio-based materials through simple, low-tech, and reproducible methods. Developed entirely at a home or small studio scale, the research prioritises experimentation and material behaviour over industrialisation.

Conducted entirely at a home or small studio scale, the project prioritises material behaviour, sensory qualities, and experimental discovery. Each material batch is approached as an open-ended study, examining texture, flexibility, durability, and visual expression through hands-on making and careful documentation.

A central aim of the project is to challenge the idea that biomaterial research belongs only to laboratories or factories. Instead, it proposes that meaningful material exploration can begin at home, driven by curiosity, care, and accessible tools. By building a growing material library and openly sharing processes and outcomes, beolab seeks to contribute to a more transparent and collective future for materials and design.

This research invites designers, architects, and curious makers to rethink waste, production, and material value, and to take part in shaping a more responsible, experimental, and circular design culture.
